It began serialization in 2012 and follows an orphaned girl, Riko, and a robot boy, Reg, as they descend into the Abyss in search of Riko's mother. Plot

Made in Abyss follows Riko, an orphaned girl who dreams of becoming a Cave Raider like her mother. Together with Reg, a humanoid robot, she explores the Abyss in search of her mother and the truth behind the chasm. The Abyss is a massive vertical chasm filled with dangerous relics, creatures, and mysteries.

Publication

The manga was written and illustrated by Akihito Tsukushi and began serialization on Takeshobo's Manga Life Win+ website in October 2012, later continuing on Web Comic Gamma. It has been collected into tankōbon volumes, with 14 volumes released as of August 2025.

Anime adaptations

The manga was adapted into a 13-episode television anime by Kinema Citrus in 2017. The franchise later expanded with a theatrical sequel film, Dawn of the Deep Soul, which premiered in Japan in January 2020, and a second television season, The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, which aired in 2022.

Setting

The series is set around the Abyss, a giant unexplored pit containing rare relics, dangerous wildlife, and layered environmental hazards. Its descent-based structure is central to the story's adventure and mystery elements.
