Joseph Boyden was born on October 31, 1966, in Willowdale, North York, Ontario, Canada. He studied at York University and later earned a master’s degree from the University of New Orleans.

Boyden is best known as a novelist and short story writer. His notable books include the short story collection Born with a Tooth, and the novels Three Day Road, Through Black Spruce, The Orenda, and Wenjack.

Major recognition

Three Day Road won the Amazon.ca First Novel Award and the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize. Through Black Spruce won the Scotiabank Giller Prize. In 2014, The Orenda was named winner of CBC’s Canada Reads. Boyden was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2015.
