Early life

Anne Lister was born in Halifax in 1791 into a landowning family. She was educated privately and later became closely associated with Shibden Hall, the family estate near Halifax.

Diaries and code

Lister kept journals for much of her adult life, writing in a system that mixed code with ordinary text. The diaries provide unusually detailed evidence of her daily life, business interests, and relationships with women.

Relationship with Ann Walker

Lister formed a long-term relationship with Ann Walker, another Yorkshire landowner. In 1834, the two took communion together at Holy Trinity Church in York and regarded the event as a marriage-like union.

Historical legacy

Lister is often described as the "first modern lesbian," though the term is a modern interpretation rather than a contemporary label. Her diaries have become a key source in the study of gender, sexuality, and 19th-century British society.
